365 Days

One year. One Earth.

Beginning Autumn Equinox 2024, director Kathleen M. Ryan is spending a year watching and listening to the land. 365 Days demonstrates how the environment speaks via its own form of oral history.

Week by Week

Week 1: September 22-28

The Autumn Equinox began at 6:43 am MT, Sunday September 22. This week visits the same location daily and shoots from the same angle and at the same time of day. But each day uses different cameras and lenses, including obsolete equipment.

Week 14: December 21-27

Winter Solstice started at 4:21am ET, when I was aboard a ship off the coast of Florida. The week focuses on dark, during the longest nights of the year. Each day brings gradually more light as the Earth turns.

Week 27: March 20-26

It seemed odd that the start of spring was in the middle of the night. After shooting the beginning of the equinox at 3:01 am local time, I then transferred to look at edges and emergences: dawn, midnight, and, by week’s end, flowers.

Week 4: October 13-19

Season ending. Transitions.

“The land speaks. On some level we all know this . . . Like any human being, the world of nature has agency of its own. It lives, it acts, it responds . . . It also speaks, to those who will learn to listen.”

– Kathryn Newfont and Debbi Lee, The Land Speaks

“The wilderness holds answers to more questions than we yet know how to ask.”

– Nancy Newhall, This Is the American Earth
