The Backstory

This project was first conceived in 2013 at a workshop in Antwerp, Belgium. During the two week period, Director Ryan documented urban nature using her cell phone and an app that mimicked old film stock. Then in 2018, she worked with filmmaking partner David Staton in field production on what would become Ghost Resort, which is an experimental poetic documentary about a partially-abandoned luxury resort on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Ryan then experimented with telling stories of the environment on a semi-regular basis, using a variety of lenses and cameras. Those explorations served as a foundation for this project.
